Dr. Nise Hitomi Yamaguchi , 55, graduated at the Faculdade de Medicina of Universidade de São Paulo in 1982 and completed Fellowship in Internal Medicine and Allergy and Immunology at the Hospital das Clínicas in 1988. During her studies she attended courses in Germany and Switzerland on the humanistic vision of the patient and their family as well as scientific immersions with cancer researchers at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY, on the aspects of Tumor Immunology, which gave the basis for her Masters thesis in the Discipline of Immunology HCFMUSP in 1993. Later on, she stayed at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as a visiting physician, where she conducted experiments at Professor Xu Xiaochu laboratories under the auspices of Dr. Waun Ki Hong and Dr. Reuben Lotan, and defended the doctoral thesis at USP, in 2002.She was certified Expert in Medical Oncology by the Brazilian Medical Association and was Scientific Director of the latter from 1997 until 2000, planning and organization of high-complexity cancer centers in Brazil for the Unified Health System.
She acted as Deputy to the Minister of Health between 2007 and 2010, and also participated in the International Affairs Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She is a Senior Scientist at the Institute of Prevention and Research and co -founder of the World Cancer Alliance in Lyon, France , where she collaborates to improve access to cancer treatment in low and middle income countries. She also co-edited two books published by the latter: The State of Oncology 2013 and the World Breast Cancer Report 2012.She is the Clinical Direstor of the Institute Advances in Medicine and the Faculdade de Medicina, University of São Paulo, where she currently is on leave without pay. Her present line of research is on Personalized Medicine in Cancer and Tumor Immunolgogy, lecturing regularly on the topic in the Course of Clinical Research at Harvard Medical School.
