Nipun B. Merchant MD

Dr. Nipun Merchant is a Renowned pancreatic cancer clinician and scientist Nipun B. Merchant, M.D., recently joined the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center as Chief Surgical Officer and Director of Surgical Oncology Research Programs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and UHealth – University of Miami Health System. Prior to joining the University of Miami, Dr. Merchant worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he has been the Director of the Vanderbilt Pancreas Center, Chief of GI Surgical Oncology, and Co-Leader of the GI Oncology Program at Vanderbilt-Ingram Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Additionally, Dr. Merchant holds the position of Vice-Chair of Surgical Oncologic Services and Academic Affairs within the Department of Surgery and will be the Chief of Surgical Oncology at the University of Miami Hospital as well as Chief Surgical Officer at UMHC/Sylvester. In addition, he will serve as Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Merchant's clinical practice is in GI malignancies with a focus on hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers. A prolific researcher and educator, Dr. Merchant has published more than 100 articles and has actively mentored dozens of medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty. He holds positions in 20 professional societies, including leadership roles in the Society of Surgical Oncology and the Society of University Surgeons and on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. Before joining Vanderbilt University Medical Center, he completed a surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and was an assistant professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University Medical School.
