Nigel Lewis MBChB, PhD, FRCP, CCDS

Dr. Nigel Lewis is an established consultant cardiologist in the NHS and is a specialist in Heart failure, Pacing, and Cardiac Implantable Devices and Inherited Cardiac Conditions.

He qualified from the University of Manchester in 2000 and completed his medical training in London and Sydney, Australia. He undertook his Cardiology specialist training at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Further to this he undertook a Cardiomyopathy fellowship with Professor Elliott at The Heart Hospital, London, and a Device and Inherited Cardiac Conditions fellowship with Professor Kalman in Melbourne, Australia.

He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2014. He was then invited to become a fellowship at the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh in 2015. He has brought innovation and new techniques in pacing and complex devices to Sheffield, including leadless pacing and new techniques to implant sub-cutaneous defibrillators and cardiac resynchronising pacing and lead service development of device extraction in South Yorkshire. He provides highly specialized care to patients throughout South Yorkshire with familial cardiac disease, undertaking a comprehensive assessment of the diagnosis and risk and performing genetic testing where appropriate. He has a wealth of experience in diagnosing and managing patients with heart failure in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He has a passionate interest in heart muscle disease and has developed services in inflammatory and infiltrative conditions.

Dr Lewis has a strong academic background and completed a PhD at the University of Leeds in Heart Failure and exercise physiology. He was successfully awarded a British Heart Foundation Fellowship grant and undertook a project looking at the effects of Pregnancy and Obesity on the cardiovascular system. He is the Cardiac Rhythm Management research lead at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and an Honorary lecturer at the University of Sheffield. He is a principal investigator for numerous clinical trials has multiple publications and presented at numerous national and international meetings.
