Nigel M. Bedforth qualified from Nottingham University Medical School in 1990. He trained in the East Midlands and spent a year as a senior clinical fellow in Sydney, Australia. He is currently a consultant anaesthetist in Nottingham and has been developing our regional anaesthesia programme since his appointment in 2001. He currently supervises their local regional anaesthesia training modules, a regional fellowship and an MD student.

He has contributed to further education in ultrasound-guided techniques in the UK by helping to develop a teaching area at a-uk.org and running national courses for over ten years. He is a board member of Regional Anaesthesia UK. He regularly runs workshops & delivers lectures at national and international meetings on ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia and has authored a number of articles on the subject. He was also an editor with the UK scientific journal ‘Anaesthesia’ for 2 ½ years.

He has been performing ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia for a number of years, and he believes this technique (when properly used) is the gold-standard technique for the delivery of peripheral regional anaesthesia. This means their regional blocks cause the least discomfort to our patients with extremely high success rates; allowing patients to avoid general anaesthesia and have their procedures either awake or under sedation (as they wish).
