Niels Riksen MD, PhD

Niels Riksen is mainly interested in pharmacological modulation of ischemia reperfusion injury. Using a translational approach 'from bench to bedside, he is involved in preclinical experiments as well as in randomized clinical trials. More recently, he also gained interest in the role of monocytes in the development of atherosclerosis in collaboration with the laboratory of experimental internal medicine.

Niels is an internist and head of the division of Vascular Medicine at the department of Internal Medicine. After his doctoral dissertation in 2007 at the department of Pharmacology-Toxicology, he worked for one year as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Hatter Cardiovascular Institute in London.

He has received a Clinical Fellowship from ZonMw and a dr. Dekker fellowship from the Netherlands Heart Foundation. On December 1st 2014, Niels Riksen has been appointed professor in Vascular Medicine.
