Dr. Nicolaos E. Madias is currently Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Caritas St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, a major teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM), a position he assumed on February 1st, 2004. He also serves as Chief Academic Officer of the Caritas Christi Health Care System. Prior to these appointments, he served as Executive Academic Dean (8/15/99-1/31/04) and Dean ad interim (1/1/03-11/1/03) at TUSM. He is also a Professor of Medicine at TUSM. A graduate of the Athens University School of Medicine, Dr. Madias was the recipient of a State Scholarship of Academic Excellence throughout his medical studies. 

Nicolaos completed his training in Internal Medicine at the Waltham-Weston Medical Center and the Caritas St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, and a clinical and research fellowship in Nephrology at Tufts-New England Medical Center (T-NEMC), the principal teaching hospital of TUSM. He joined the staff of the Division of Nephrology at T-NEMC in 1976 and served as Director of the Hypertension Clinic and Director of Research. In 1982, he became Chief of the Division, a position he held until his appointment as Executive Academic Dean at TUSM in August 1999. 

Dr. Madias was first appointed to the faculty at TUSM in 1976. A Professor of Medicine at TUSM since 1988, Dr. Madias is an internationally respected nephrologist, highly regarded for his investigations into acid-base and electrolyte physiology and pathophysiology (at the “whole-body”, subcellular, and molecular levels) as well as the treatment of hypertensive disorders. He has served as an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association and a member of the Internal Medicine and Nephrology Boards of the American Board of Internal Medicine. His research studies have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, and various foundations. 

Dr. Madias is the author of 65 original publications and over 100 reviews, book chapters, books, etc. He is a member of numerous scientific societies and editorial boards of professional publications and served as co-editor of the Nephrology Forum of Kidney International, the official journal of the International Society of Nephrology (1982-2005). He is the recipient of many awards and honors, including several Citations for Excellence in Teaching from TUSM and the Distinguished Faculty Award of TUSM. Dr. Madias has served as Visiting Professor at numerous institutions in the US and abroad and has lectured extensively at many forums worldwide. He has trained a large number of nephrologists, many of whom have attained positions of prominence on the national and international scenes. Dr. Madias resides in Newton, Massachusetts with his wife Ourania, a child and adolescent psychiatrist. They have two sons, Elias and Christopher.
