Nicola I. Abate MD

Dr. Abate is professor and chief of the Division of Endocrinology and the Charles Sprague, M.D. Distinguished Professor in Internal Medicine at UTMB Health. His research focuses on studying metabolic and genetic determinants of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is the common denominator for the clustering of metabolic abnormalities identified in the "Metabolic Syndrome" and increases risk for both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, two major causes of morbidity and mortality for our population.
As director of the Endocrinology Division, he leads a clinical and research program with a special focus on obesity, metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Ultimately, the goal of the research and clinical program is to develop effective strategies to prevent type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
