Nicol Voermans MD,PhD

Nicol Voermans is an Associate Professor at the Radboud University Nijmegen. Within neurology, her focus is on neuromuscular disorders. These are diseases of the motor of our body: in concern the structures of our body that enable movements (spinal cord, the nerves, the neuromuscular junction, and the muscles). There are over 600 different neuromuscular diseases; some of them are acquired and others are inherited.

The wide variety of symptoms and the presentation of diseases throughout the life span fascinate her. She is often impressed by the way that patients adapt to their disease, and make the best of it in spite of their limitations. She was puzzled by the different symptoms among family members with the same genetic defect, suggesting that many still unknown factors influence the severity of the disease.
