Nicholas James Short MD

Dr. Short attended received his M.D. degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his internal medicine training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts and his hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he graduated in 2017.

Dr. Short is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Leukemia and is actively involved in clinical research, with an emphasis in myelodysplastic syndromes and acute leukemias, specifically acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). He has published extensively in this area, authoring dozens of peer-reviewed original research or review articles. Dr. Short has developed several phase I and II clinical trials of novel agents and combinations for patients with ALL and other leukemias. He has a particular interest in the molecular profiling of ALL and the prognostic impact of minimal residual disease. To this end, he is currently working to identify pre-treatment genomic alterations and low levels of minimal residual disease that persist after therapy. The goal of this research is to better risk-stratify patients with ALL and identify those who are most likely to benefit from stem cell transplantation. For Dr. Short’s accomplishments in the field of leukemia research, he has received a number of awards, including the American Journal of Hematology Young Investigator Award, the Celgene Future Leaders in Hematology Award, and the ASCO Young Investigator Award.
