Dr Hart has been clinical and academic director for the Lane Fox Respiratory Service. He was appointed in 2013 as Research and Development Lead for the Division of Peri-Operative, Critical Care, Lane Fox and Pain at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation Trust with the responsibility to manage the research and financial activity of the division. Dr Hart has consistently ensured that the division is the 2nd highest patient recruiter in the Trust. In addition, since his appointment in 2013, he has successfully managed the financial activity of Peri-Operative, Critical Care, Lane Fox and Pain.

Since his first application in 2009, Dr Hart has been awarded 9 Local Clinical Excellence Award points and he will be applying for a national award in 2016. The Lane Fox Respiratory Unit is a national weaning, rehabilitation and complex home ventilation unit specialising in provision of long-term ventilatory support through its in-hospital, outpatients and outreach services. Nicholas Hart is the Clinical and Academic Director of the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital, Reader in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Kings College London and Directorate Research & Development Lead at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The Lane Fox Respiratory Unit is a national weaning, rehabilitation and complex home ventilation unit specialising in provision of long-term ventilatory support. His research is focused on the reduction of respiratory morbidity with the specific aims of reducing dyspnoea, increasing exercise capacity and enhancing health-related quality of life in patients with chronic respiratory disease.

He has developed a clinical respiratory physiological research programme, which focuses on two major areas: (1) advanced physiological monitoring and ventilatory strategies and (2) muscle wasting, weakness and rehabilitation. In addition to leading the development of translational skeletal muscle biology programme, Dr. Hart is principal investigator of a number of UKCRN portfolio studies and chief investigator of the ‘HoT-HMV’ trial, ‘NERO’ trial and the ‘OPIP’ trial as well as being on the Executive Pulmonary Advisory Board at Philips. Dr Hart’s own current and collaborative research projects are funded by National Institute of Health Research, Medical Research Council, European Union, British Lung Foundation, Rosetree Foundation, Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity and a number of unrestricted grants from industry partners.
