Dr Niall Barron is Program Leader in Mammalian Cell Engineering at the National Institute for Cellular Biotechnology in DCU. He received his PhD in 1997 from the University of Ulster in the area of Applied Microbiology.

From there he went to work in Dr.Bert O’Malley’s group at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas to perform postdoctoral research on novel steroid receptor co-activators, in particular the generation of mouse knock-out models using gene targeting in embryonic stem cells.

He returned to Ireland in 2000, as a research scientist working in the National Institute for Cellular Biotechnology. His area of expertise is recombinant protein production from Chinese Hamster Ovary cells in the Biopharmaceutical industry, with a particular interest in using microRNAs as engineering tools.
