Neil completed his PhD (DPhil) in 2001 and his medical degree in 2004 both from the University of Oxford. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physician (MRCP) in 2007, and was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer and Specialist Registrar in Cardiology at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. In 2011 he was awarded a BHF CRE Fellowship and University Research Lectureship, and was made an Associate Professor in 2015 having been awarded an Intermediate Fellowship from the BHF.

His basic science research is based in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics and explores how the autonomic nervous system influences cardiac pacemaking and arrhythmias. Neil continues to do clinical work as a Consultant Cardiologist sub-specializing in cardiac pacing and rhythm management devices, and is also widely involved in medical school education as a Tutor and Fellow (by special election) at Keble College, Oxford.
