Dr. Jones graduated from Trinity College, Oxford University in 1971 and Oxford University Medical School in 1974. He trained in general surgery in England becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. After completing a further residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Michigan from 1979-1981, he returned to England for a fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Royal London Hospital and St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1982, followed by a second fellowship in Orthopedic Hand Surgery and Microsurgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston and Harvard Medical School in 1983.

He was appointed Assistant Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in 1984 and became Associate Professor and Chief of Hand Surgery and Microsurgery in 1989.

Dr. Jones was recruited to become Chief of Hand Surgery at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and Director of the UCLA Hand Surgery Fellowship in 1993 with a dual appointment as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the UCLA School of Medicine.

After 15 years as Professor and Chief of Hand Surgery at UCLA Medical Center, he moved to become Professor and Chief of Hand Surgery at UC Irvine in 2008 and Director of the UC Irvine Fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery.
