Navtej Singh Buttar MD

Dr. Navtej Singh Buttar is a Professor of Medicine and an advanced interventional endoscopist in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Mayo Clinic. He specializes in minimally invasive endoscopic therapies for complex gastrointestinal disorders, including gastrointestinal leaks, perforations, fistulas, inflammatory bowel disease-related strictures, Barrett’s esophagus, and gastrointestinal cancers.

Dr. Buttar earned his MBBS from the University of Rajasthan in 1989 and later completed surgical residency training at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research in India. He continued his medical training in the United States with internal medicine residency training at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, followed by gastroenterology fellowship training at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

At Mayo Clinic, Dr. Buttar has served in multiple leadership roles, including Associate Chair of Gastroenterology Administration, Director of the GI Bleed Team and Complex Endoscopy Program, and Vice Chair of the GI International Practice. He also founded and led specialized multidisciplinary endoscopic innovation initiatives focused on advanced therapeutic endoscopy and complex gastrointestinal disease management.

His research interests center on Barrett’s esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), esophageal carcinogenesis, chemoprevention, and advanced endoscopic treatment strategies. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications examining the molecular mechanisms of Barrett’s-associated cancer progression, reflux disease pathogenesis, and novel therapeutic interventions in gastroenterology.

Dr. Buttar has received multiple honors for excellence in teaching, research, and clinical innovation, including repeated Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year awards and several gastroenterology research distinctions. He is also an active member of major professional organizations including the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
