Doctor Naveed Sattar obtained his MD in 1990 from the University of Glasgow. He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Biochemistry in 1999 and as Professor of Metabolic Medicine in 2005. His research interests began in reproductive medicine but have expanded to include work on putative risk factors for vascular disease with particular emphasis on inflammatory pathways and insulin resistance. This expertise has enabled him to contribute to analyses on large databases such as the West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study, IRAS, San Antonio Heart study and the Southall study. He has also contributed to important intervention trials of statins in inflammatory conditions, and insulin sensitizing agents in PCOS and ischemic heart disease. He has published more than 100 original papers, including recent papers in Circulation, Lancet, Diabetes, JCEM, and ATVB and co-edited, with Mike Lean, the ABC series on Obesity for the BMJ, which will appear as a book in May 2007. He was awarded the Professors Prize for Clinical Biochemistry in 2001, the RD Lawrence Lecture for contributions to diabetes research in 2005 (by Diabetes UK) and the John French Lectureship by the British Atherosclerosis Society in 2006 for contributions to research in atherosclerosis. He is on the editorial boards for Clinical Science and JCEM. Finally, but perhaps most importantly, his passions outside work include his two young children (Zara near 4 and Zakee 6) and playing football wherever the opportunity arise
