Dr. Malas graduated medical school from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and also obtained a Masters of Public Health and a certificate in the Leadership in Education in Neurodevelopment Disabilities at the Waisman Center. Dr. Malas then pursued residency and fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in the Triple Board Program. He received training and board certification in Pediatrics, Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Dr. Malas currently serves as the Director of Pediatric Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and has been in this position since August of 2014. He also serves as faculty of the Michigan Child Collaborative Care (MC3) Program, an innovative telepsychiatry program for the state of Michigan. Dr. Malas is active in teaching, patient-family centered care, administration, quality improvement, clinical practice guideline and resource development, as well as research.

Dr. Malas's clinical and research interests include improving patient and family centered care, education, quality improvement, as well as the study of conditions such as pediatric delirium, pediatric somatic symptom and related disorders, neuropsychiatric disease and psychiatric illness in physically ill youth.

Dr. Malas has done extensive training in motivational interviewing and is a Motivational Interviewing Network Trainer since 2014, providing local and national trainings and education in motivational interviewing. Dr. Malas has authored several publications across his areas of interest and is active in teaching, both in Pediatrics and Psychiatry.
