Dr. Huq was born and raised in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He studied for two years at Dalhousie in Halifax and then attended the University of Western Ontario for his M.D.. He started in General Surgery in 1993 and completed his Plastic Surgery training at McMaster in Hamilton in 1998. Dr. Huq then completed fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery at the Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. He then returned to Canada and worked at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto while completing a masters in Neuroscience and Behavioural Science in Hamilton. Dr. Huq has settled in Niagara Falls, Ontario since 2000 and is currently an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Surgery at McMaster University.

Dr. Huq started his career in Niagara Falls mostly in hand surgery, trauma surgery and breast reductions, (this gradually shifted to performing more cosmetic surgery including face lifts, blepharoplasties and brow lifts and then the practice of more abdominoplasties). At present a large portion of his practice is now reconstructive skin cancer. Dr. Huq has published his clinical research and basic science research in national and international journals. The current focus of research is on local anesthetics. Dr. Huq was very honoured to be the guest editor of Clinics in Plastic Surgery “Local Anesthetics Plastic Surgery” published by Elsevier in 2013. Dr. Huq has been an invited speaker to many national and international meetings in the area of clinical research.

Dr. Huq also has an interest in international health and has served as a chairperson for finances for the Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC), as a division of the World Health Organization. Dr. Huq also has interest in philanthropy where he and his family have made significant donations in the recovery of international disasters including tsunami from the Indian Ocean in 2004, the earthquake in the Kashmir district in Pakistan in October 2005, the earthquake in China in May of 2008, the earthquake in January 2010 in Haiti, the Ebola virus outbreak in 2014, as well as many other national and international charities.
