Dr. Alsharif's main research area is toxicology; however, for the past 16 years, he has been pursuing a systematic study of his teaching and has published many scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) articles focusing on technology in the classroom and the divide between campus and distance students.

Dr. Alsharif and Dr. Gintaras Duda, associate professor of physics were the first to receive this inaugural award. The Distinguished Educator in Teaching as Scholarship award is an all-University award created to recognize excellence based on evidence of effective teaching.
