Dr. Najam Wasty has been practicing invasive/interventional cardiology for over thirty-five years and is currently the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and the Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Training Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Rutgers-NJ Medical School and is a pioneer in the field of complex coronary stenting with and without the use of the Impella device.
Over twenty years ago, Dr. Wasty successfully performed several of the first left main coronary artery stent procedures in the state of New Jersey for patients who had been turned down for open heart surgery due to a prohibitive surgical risk.
Dr. Wasty has done original work on alternate access for Impella support for such procedures when the conventional leg approach is not a feasible option.
He led the team at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center which was the first on the entire Eastern seaboard of the United States to perform and report an Impella insertion from the upper arm (Axillary Artery approach) in 2014.
