Dr. Azad obtained her medical degrees from the University of Ottawa in 1983. She completed an internal medicine residency in 1986 and a fellowship in geriatric medicine at Ottawa U in 1991. She achieved the academic rank of full professor in 2011 for her scholarship as a clinician teacher and researcher. She has been invited speaker at many international conferences and she continues to be actively engaged in both under- and postgraduate education.

As a geriatrician in full clinical practice, she has held many leadership positions. For 10 years, she was head of geriatric services at the Ottawa General Hospital and post-amalgamation of hospitals, she became director of the Geriatric Assessment Inpatient Unit at the Ottawa Hospital, where she was responsible for overall service quality and led many projects. She has been successful at driving projects to completion by building extended teams. Her clinical work mainly includes geriatric assessment of acute care inpatients and rehabilitation. She has also been involved with clinics such as memory disorder assessment as outreach services to smaller communities. She developed Tele-Health services to enhance assessment of follow ups to dementia and heart failure to assist local family physicians.
