Dr. Mustafa D. M. Nazzal, MD, MLS, FACS is an Associate Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. Dr. Mustafa Nazzal specializes in adult and pediatric liver transplantation; liver tumors and minimally invasive liver surgery; complex hepato-biliary surgery; and split liver transplant. He performs kidney-pancreas transplant surgery, intestinal rehabilitation surgery, and general surgery on transplant and cirrhotic patients. Dr. Nazzal uses the latest surgical techniques, including laparoscopic surgery for liver tumors in cirrhotic patients.
His research includes pre-transplant loco-regional therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma and post-transplant outcomes, and collection of blood and liver tissue for research, with the goal of growing hepatocellular carcinoma cells in mice. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he holds memberships in the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the American Association for Liver Disease, and the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association.
