Murray is a Professor in Human Nutrition at the University of Otago. He has contributed to research on the nutritional properties and health effects of fats and oils on cardiovascular disease, including an emphasis on biomarkers of fat intake. Like many nutrition scientists, he claims to have dabbled in other areas of nutrition research, and these have included experimental and observational studies on cognition, vitamin D and folate status of populations, and metabolic effects of sedentary behaviour. Currently he serves as a member of the WHO Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group (NUGAG) subgroup on Diet and Health.
Professor Murray Skeaff has a BSc(Hons) and a PhD from the University of Guelph, Canada. He has been a member of the Department of Human Nutrition at the University of Otago since arriving from Canada in 1988. Internationally, he serves as member of the World Health Organisation’s Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group, the trans-Tasman Review of Nutrient Reference Values Advisory Board, and the FSANZ Health Claims Advisory Group. Nationally, he served on the Technical Advisory Group for Eating and Healthy Activity Guidelines and is currently a member of the New Zealand Heart Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee
