Dr Murali Dharan Bashyam received his Ph.D. Degree in Biochemistry in 1996 from the University of Delhi under the supervision of Professor Anil K. Tyagi, a pioneer researcher in the field of tuberculosis. For his thesis, Dr Bashyam worked on the characterisation of transcriptional signals from mycobacteria. After receiving Ph.D, he joined the Eukaryotic Gene Expression laboratory in NII, New Delhi led by Dr. Seyed E. Hasnain, an eminent Scientist. During his two years at NII working on regulation of the Baculovirus polyhedrin gene promoter, he developed a keen interest in eukaryotic gene expression and genomics. In November 1999, Dr Bashyam joined CDFD as a staff scientist and Head, Laboratory of Molecular Oncology. He was an International Visiting Scientist at The Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, USA, 2013; International Visiting Fellow at National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, USA, 2009 and Visiting International Investigator at Department of Pathology, Stanford University School of Medicine, 2003-2004.
Dr Bashyam is an elected member of Association of UICC (international union against cancer) Fellows (AUF), the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) and American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). He is a Life member of Indian Association for Cancer research, National Science Congress, India, the Society of Biological Chemists, India and the Association of Microbiologists of India. He is also a member of the 'Cancer Biology' task force of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India, since September 2017.
