Professor Dr. Muhammad Ashraf was born on March 1, 1954. He completed his M.Sc (Hons) in 1980 with distinction and was awarded the Quaid-e-Azam scholarship for higher studies in the USA. He earned his Ph. D degree in 1989 from the University of Minnesota, USA. He was appointed Assistant Professor in 1989, Associate Professor in 1996, and professor in 2003. He was appointed Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, UVAS Lahore, in 2002. In May 2003, he was appointed as Dean Faculty of Bio-Sciences and completed two tenures. He was then appointed as Director of Research and then again Dean Faculty of Bio-Sciences in 2012 for his third Tenure. In 2009, Dr. Ashraf was appointed as Professor TTS and was granted Permanent Tenure in 2013.

Muhammad Ashraf is a dedicated academician and researcher and HEC-approved Ph.D. supervisor. Ten Ph.D. and 123M.Phil. students have completed their Postgraduate degrees under his supervision. His main areas of research are Pharmacokinetics, toxicology, Chemotherapy, and Medicinal and Toxic Plants. Dr. Ashrafwon three competitive research and two developmental grants. He has several national and international books on his credit. He has more than 134research papers (57National and 77 International) published mostly in peer review impact factor journals. He has participated in many national and international conferences. His impact factor is above 100 and citations exceed 300. He is also listed as a Productive Scientist of Pakistan and was awarded Research Productivity Award by the Pakistan Council of Science and Technology.

Dr. Ashraf's first time in Pakistan conducted comprehensive research on diclofenac toxicity in avian species, hazards of tannery pollution in animals, autorickshaw smoke effects, and use of plants for theileriosis in animals. He is very popular among the students and was awarded the best university teacher award in 2008 by HEC. Many of his students are working in key positions locally and abroad. Organization of Six national and International Conferences on Pharmaceutical and Environmental toxicology in the Department from 2008 to 2013 consecutively in collaboration with HEC and the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom are on his credit.

Ashraf has served as a member of the Veterinary Drug expert committee of the Ministry of Health Pakistan. He was a member of many statuary bodies of the university and also the Convener of a committee for the development of the Curriculum for Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology. He started many Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degree programs in the faculty of BioSciences and has raised the level of education to the international level. After his retirement, he was appointed as professor emeritus in the department of pharmacology and toxicology, UVAS Lahore. On the occasion of Independence Day 14th August 2014, he was nominated for the Presidential civil award TAMGHA-I-IMTIAZ in Veterinary Medicine.
