Dr. Sherman is Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada, and a staff gastroenterologist at the University Health Network and at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto. In addition to his AASLD fellowship, he is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. He is Chairman of the Board of the Canadian Liver Foundation and a past president of the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

He serves on the editorial boards of HEPATOLOGY, the American Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Viral Hepatitis. He received his M.B., B.Ch. at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and his PhD in protein biochemistry at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He completed post-doctoral training in molecular biology at the Liver Research Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York.
