Monika Hegi received his PhD in natural sciences at the ETH Zurich in 1989. After postdoctoral work on the molecular carcinogenesis at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in North Carolina from 1989 to 1993, she was hired as a research associate at the Institute of Neuropathology Department of Pathology of the University Hospital of Zurich, where she focused her research on brain tumors.
Since 1998, she directs the Laboratory of Biology and Genetics of Brain Tumors (LBGT) of the Department of Neurosurgery. She was appointed Associate Professor at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne in 2009.
