Diab joined UCSF in 2002, coming from the University of Washington, where he was a faculty member and where he trained in general orthopedic surgery. He earned his medical degree from Stanford University, and completed his pediatric orthopedic surgical training at Harvard University. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America and Scoliosis Research Society. He is a professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Pediatrics, and holds a Chair in Medical Education, at UCSF.
