Mingyi Chen MD, PhD

Mingyi Chen, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in hematopathology and has a special interest in hematolymphoid disease that involves the pulmonary and gastrointestinal systems, as well as bone marrow transplants. Dr. Chen earned his medical degree at Peking University Health Science Center in China and his doctoral degree in pharmacology at Kyoto University in Japan. He completed a residency in pathology at the University of California, San Diego, and Loma Linda University Medical Center and received advanced training through a hematopathology fellowship at City of Hope National Medical Center. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pathology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Certified by the American Board of Pathology in hematology and anatomic and clinical pathology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2016.

Dr. Chen’s research interests include biomarker development for cancer diagnosis, cancer stem cells, and immunotherapy; molecular pathogenesis of lymphoma and leukemia, tumor immunology, and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD); and atherosclerosis, thrombosis, vascular biology, sickle cell disease, and lipid metabolism. He is active in several research projects, including serving as Co-Investigator for a National Institutes of Health-funded study exploring the p53-Rbm38-elF4E pathway to suppress tumors.

He has contributed to numerous books, including most recently Translational Immunology, Atlas of Sinonasal Tract Pathology, and Gastrointestinal Oncology: A Critical Multidisciplinary Team Approach. He has published more than 140 academic articles related to his areas of expertise.

Dr. Chen is a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Hematopathology, Frontiers in Oncology, and Seminars in Diagnostic Pathology. He serves as an expert reviewer for many journals and grant agencies.
