Prof. Miikka Dal Maso became a professor at the aerosol physics laboratory in 2016, after nearly 4 years as an associate professor at the same laboratory. He received his PhD in 2006 from the University of Helsinki, after which he did a 2-year post-doctoral research period at the Jülich Research Centre in Germany. Dal Maso’s main research focus is secondary aerosol formation, but his research covers understanding aerosol processes and their numerical modeling over a wide range of applications.
Prof. Dal Maso’s current research tries to answer the question of how the emissions from man-made aerosol sources evolve in the atmosphere and how they affect climate and air quality. This involves detailed characterization of the emitted aerosol with the latest methods, experimental simulation of the atmospheric dilution and oxidation processes, and numerical modeling of the physical and chemical transformations the aerosol experiences in its life cycle. Lately, he has aimed to use atmospheric mass spectrometric methods (CI-TOF-CIMS and FIGARO-CIMS) in emission and mobile settings.
Dal Maso has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers with over 8700 citations (h-index 44), of which 2 are in Science, 2 in Nature, and 2 in its sister papers (Geosciences, Protocols), and 1 in PNAS. He is the chairman of the board of the Finnish Association of Aerosol Research. He has supervised 3 PhD and 8 MSc theses and is currently supervising 5 PhD students. Dal Maso teaches Aerosol Physics and Aerosol Measurement Techniques courses, as well as the introductory course on climate change, Climate. now. He has participated in developing new university-level online learning materials for climate and sustainability education via the Climate University project.
