Stifelman graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York in 1993. After completing an internship and residency in General Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York from 1993 to 1995, Stifelman continued with his residency in Urology there from 1995 to 1998. In his final year there from 1998 to 1999, Stifelman was the chief resident in urology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. From 1999 to 2000, Stifelman completed his fellowship in Endourology and Laparoscopy at New York Presbyterian Cornell. In 2000, Stifelman was recruited to the NYU Langone Medical Center as the director of minimally invasive urologic surgery. Since joining NYU, Stifelman has been appointed chief of the urology service at Tisch Hospital and director of robotic surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center. His clinical focus is on the use of robotic and laparoscopic surgical techniques to treat diseases of the genitourinary tract. He has performed over 1,000 robotic and laparoscopic procedures and has pioneered over a dozen minimally invasive surgeries.

Academically, Stifelman focuses on developing and evaluating new technologies and defining their exact roles in the operating room. He continues to create standardized teaching techniques to train residents and practicing surgeons in the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques. He is on Faculty of many courses including the American Urological Association and the International Robotic Urology Symposium. Each year he travels as a visiting surgeon both nationally and internationally disseminating advanced robotic techniques. He has written numerous book chapters on advanced robotic and laparoscopic procedures and has authored over 100 scientific articles and abstracts on robotic and laparoscopic surgery.
