Michael Scott Carnes DO, FAAO

Dr. Carnes graduated from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997, followed by an internship in emergency medicine in Richmond Heights, Ohio, and a residency in osteopathic manipulative medicine at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, New York. He was in practice and teaching environments, developing hospital consult services and neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM) residencies, in Fort Worth and then Muskegon, Michigan, from 2000 to 2013. He has been teaching and practicing at the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine since 2013.

Dr. Carnes served on the AAO’s Postdoctoral Standards Committee from 2001 to 2016 and on the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (AOBNM) from 2008 to 2019. He was awarded the first Emerging Leaders Award from the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) in 2002, and he earned a fellowship in the AAO in 2008.

In his candidacy statement, Dr. Carnes wrote, “The AAO is uniquely equipped with the commitment and expertise within the membership to continue providing the excellent education and mentorship that brings us back to these workshops, courses, and meetings year after year.”

Dr. Carnes’ contributions to osteopathic medicine include revising the Basic Standard for Residency Training in NMM as part of the AAO’s Postdoctoral Standards Committee, which allowed the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Review Committee for osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine (ONMM) to use the language created for these standards as the foundation of the ONMM residency training guidelines under the new accreditation system.
