Michael P. Casaer MD, PhD

Michael Casaer graduated cum laude as Medical Doctor at the KULeuven in 1996. He is a Board-certified anesthesiologist (since 2001) and intensive care specialist (since 2006) after training in the ZOL Genk & University Hospitals Leuven. He worked as an Anesthesiologist–Instructor in the Intensive Care Unit and Operating Theatre for Doctors Without Borders Belgium in St. Marc, Haiti, from 2001 to 2002. Appointed Consultant in the UZLeuven Department of Intensive Care Medicine, with particular responsibility for the Burn Unit, professor Casaer, conducted epidemiological research in Burns awarded with the Prix Martin Ramelot in 2007. He enjoyed a clinical training of 1 month in the highly reputed Burn Center of Dr. Herndon in Galveston, TX USA and obtained the ABA-Advanced Burn Life Support Instructor and Provider certificate in Chicago (2005).

Michael Casaer, appointed assistant professor in 2013 and associate professor in 2016 obtained a post-doctoral clinical research grant from KULeuven 2013 to 2016 and from FWO from 2016 to 2021. His postdoctoral research until today includes posthoc analyses of the effect of disease and dose in the EPaNIC trial, identification of new strategies to activate autophagy in the ICU and the Early versus late PN trial in critically ill children (PEPaNIC).
