Michael Musalek was born in Vienna, Austria on March 26, 1955. He studied medicine and obtained his MD (1979) at the University of Vienna, Medical School, Austria. In 1986, he qualified as Specialist for Psychiatry and Neurology; in 1993, qualification as Psychotherapist. From 1989 to 2001 he worked as Head-Psychiatrist at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Vienna; 1989 – 2003 he was Head of the Liaison Clinic for Psychodermatology at the Department of Dermatology, University of Vienna. In 1990, he qualified as Senior University Lecturer for Psychiatry (“venia docendi”); in 1997 he was appointed as Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vienna, Medical School, Austria; since 2001 he is Medical Director of a Department for Alcoholism and Drug Addiction at the Anton Proksch Institute Vienna and since April 2004 General Medical Director of the Anton Proksch Institute, Vienna (one of the biggest Addiction Clinic in Europe – more than 200 co-workers, 300 beds, 7 out-patient clinics, at about 12.000 treated patients/year, ca. 2000 in-patients and 10.000 out-patients), since 2007 Vice Chairman of the Research Division for Mental Health (Health and Life Science University, Hall/Austria); Visiting Professor of the Sigmund Freud University Vienna and Visiting Professor of the University Belgrade – Clinic for Psychiatry CCS & School of Medicine. Since 2015 he is Head of the Institute for Social Aesthetics and Mental Health of the Sigmund Freud Private University Vienna.
