Dr. Michael Montalto graduated from medical school at the University of Melbourne in 1986 and completed his Ph.D. in 1999 on quality measurement in Hospital the Homecare. He has been involved in policy, research, and clinical leadership in the area of Hospital in the Home since 1993. He is currently the Unit Head of Hospital in the Home at Epworth Healthcare (the biggest private not-for-profit hospital provider in Victoria). He has opened 2 large Hospitals the Home services (Epworth Hospital and Mornington Peninsula Hospital) and transformed one from a nurse-only service to a medically intensive medical HITH (Royal Melbourne Hospital 2004-2017). Michael has been directly involved in the clinical management of approximately 20,000 HITH admissions.
He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Hospital in the Home Society of Australasia, and a Director of Aged Care Imaging, a mobile x-ray service for nursing home patients. He is the first author of over 20 peer-reviewed publications and the author of a book entitled "Hospital in the Home: principles and practice". He has been a member of the steering committees of both major evaluations of Hospital in the Home in Victoria and was a member of the Health Innovation and Reform Council at the invitation of the Victorian Minister of Health from 2011-to 2014. He has worked for almost all his clinical career to develop, evaluate and disseminate high-quality Hospitals in the Home.
