Michael Lee Linenberger is a hematologist who treats patients with blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes, or blood disorders such as anemia, sickle cell disease, thrombosis, and bleeding. His research focuses on apheresis, the procedure for removing specific cell types from blood. He is an expert in the bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell procurement for transplantation, collection of immune effector cells, and safety issues for patients and recipients of cell-based therapies. At Fred Hutch, he is the chief medical director of the Cell Processing Facility and medical director of Apheresis and Cellular Therapy, and the collection center for the National Marrow Donor Program. He is actively involved in teaching at the University of Washington and Fred Hutch, where he directs the adult Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program.
Dr. Linenberger prioritizes developing a close working relationship with patients, their significant others, and their caregivers.
Dr. Linenberger earned his M.D. at the University of Kansas. As director of the UW Hematology-Oncology fellowship program, he spends a significant time working on fellow education and career development. Dr. Linenberger sits on numerous committees for national societies and organizations, including the American Society of Hematology, AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banks), and the American Society for Apheresis. He is a fellow of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
