Dr. Michael Lawless trained in cornea and external diseases with Prof. Doug Coster in Adelaide and in cornea and refractive surgery with Prof. Richard Troutman in New York. Back in Sydney, he was the first surgeon to perform LASIK in 1995 and cataract surgery with the femtosecond laser in 2011. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed scientific papers and textbook chapters on innovations in eye surgery and delivered a keynote lecture on the future of laser cataract surgery at the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2012. He was the president of the International Society of Refractive Surgery in 2001, chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, Royal North Shore Hospital from 2000 to 2006, and convenor of the cataract scientific program at the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in 2013.

Dr Lawless graduated in Medicine from the University of Sydney in 1980 and completed his ophthalmology training in Sydney, which was followed by two years of sub-specialty education. This began with a corneal and external diseases Fellowship with Professor Doug Coster in Adelaide, followed by a second Fellowship in corneal and refractive surgery with Professor Richard Troutman at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital in New York.
