Dr. Jonathan Worsey undertook his initial training in England, beginning with intern positions at St. Thomas’ Hospital London and St. Mary’s Hospital Portsmouth. He undertook further surgical training at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport and the Bristol Royal Infirmary, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1989.
After coming to the United States in 1989 Dr. Worsey spent 2 years at the University of Iowa in surgical research. He then completed a surgical residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, 1991-1997, writing and presenting numerous clinical papers and receiving several awards.
In 1997 he was a fellow at the internationally renowned Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he studied with Dr. Victor Fazio. In 1998 he spent a further year at the Cleveland Clinic as the clinical associate of Dr. Fazio gaining experience in complex colon and rectal surgery. He left in 1999 to become an associate of Dr. Launer in private practice at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla. Dr. Worsey has been Chief of Surgery at this hospital 2010-11 and Chief of Staff 2014-15. He is currently Co-Chair of the Scripps Surgery Care Line, Medical Director of the Value Analysis Program and serves on the board of Scripps Accountable Care Organization. He remains in private practice with Dr. Beiermeister who joined the practice in 2013
Dr. Worsey’s interests include all aspects of colon and rectal surgery but he has a particular interest in Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, rectal cancer and laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery. In recent years Dr. Worsey has specialized in complex and re-operative colon and rectal operations on patients from all over the Southwest. He has extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery for colon and rectal cancer as well as diverticulitis and Crohn’s Disease. His practice is restricted to colon and rectal surgery.
