Michael J. Friedlander, Ph.D., the founding executive director of the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, was named Virginia Tech’s inaugural vice president for health sciences and technology in March 2016.

In addition to his role as executive director of the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, his new responsibilities call for him to lead a dynamic network that connects and enhances health science-related work across the university.

Friedlander completed a Bachelor of Science degree at Florida State University, a doctorate in physiology and biophysics at the University of Illinois, and postdoctoral training at the University of Virginia. Friedlander spent his childhood in Miami. He and his wife Sandra have five daughters and nine grandchildren.
