Michael Alaia, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and a member of the Sports Medicine Division at the NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. He is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, tendon and ligament injuries as well as injuries of the knee, shoulder, and elbow. Born and raised in Levittown, New York, and graduating magna cum laude from Cornell University, Dr. Alaia received his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine, where he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Society and received awards for academic and clinical excellence. He then completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases and had the additional honor of being named an Executive Chief Resident during his final year of training. He then completed an additional year of fellowship training in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the James A. Nicholas Fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, treating active patients of all ages and studying innovative procedures dedicated to joint preservation, soft tissue repair, and complex reconstruction. During this time, he also had the privilege of treating elite athletes and working with the medical staff of the New York Jets and New York Islanders.

Dr. Alaia currently serves as the Co-Director of the NYU Langone Health Sports Medicine Fellowship and Director of Orthopedic Continuing Medical Education and trains residents and fellows at NYU Langone Medical Center. He participated in the acclaimed 2017 Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) Traveling Fellowship, where he participated in academic exchanges with many leaders in the field. One year later, he was a host at NYU for the same fellowship as well as the AOA Asian Travelling Fellowship. He was honored in 2019 by being selected as the William Jaffe Teaching Award recipient as the teacher of the year. In addition, he serves as an orthopedic consultant to the US Ski and Snowboard team. He has had many media appearances and is a former host of "The Orthopedics Show" on Sirius XM Radio.

Dr. Alaia has 100 peer-reviewed publications, and over 100 presentations at national meetings, and is considered a national and international expert in knee and shoulder reconstruction, particularly complex knee injuries and ligament reconstructions. He presents research and expert opinion lectures in yearly academic proceedings, with a current focus on complex reconstruction of the knee, shoulder, elbow, and ankle, with an added focus on revision ACL reconstruction, multi-ligament knee injuries, and joint preservation/cartilage surgery. He treats adolescents and adults of all ages and is available for appointments. Dr. Alaia currently sees patients in Manhattan, Queens, and Manhasset, New York.

Dr. Alaia is board-certified by the ABOS and has received his subspecialty certification in sports medicine from the ABOS. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), The International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM).
