Dr. Muto has a special research interest in ovarian cancer occurring in women with a genetic predisposition to the disease. He is Co-Director of the Familial Ovarian Cancer Center in the Cancer Risk and Prevention Service at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In this capacity, he is involved in the clinical management of women with BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 mutations.

He is interested in chemoprevention, the efficacy of ultrasound, and CA-125 in early detection and in the role of prophylactic surgery in the prevention of ovarian cancer in these high-risk women. His clinical activity supports molecular biologic studies in the etiology of papillary serous carcinoma of the peritoneum, a disease that may occur following prophylactic surgery and which has an impact upon the effectiveness of the operation.
