Professor Doherty was educated at Cambridge University (1st Class) and the Middlesex Hospital London. He undertook an Arthritis Research Council (ARC) Research Fellowship in Bristol (1980-82) and was awarded the Raymond Horton-Smith prize by Cambridge University for MD on Pyrophosphate Arthropathy. He worked as Senior Registrar in Bristol and Bath before becoming Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology and Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist in Nottingham (1985). He was promoted to Professor of Rheumatology in Nottingham (1996) and now heads the Academic Rheumatology Department.
