Dr. Michael C. Kurz began his medical career as a paramedic in Charlottesville, Virginia. He served in this capacity for seven years while obtaining his M.D. and an M.S. in Health Evaluation Sciences at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He completed his training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago and Fellowship in Emergent Cardiac Care at Virginia Commonwealth University. Boarded in both Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services, Dr. Kurz is currently a physician scientist at the Alabama Resuscitation Center and an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Kurz serves as vice-chair of the American Heart Association's Emergency Cardiac Care Subcommittee on Systems of Care and the Systems of Care Writing Group helping to craft the 2015 AHA guidelines. His research interests are focused upon resuscitation, post-resuscitation care, and rehabilitation following cardiac arrest. He is the Associate Director for the Acute Care Research and Resuscitation Center (ARC) at UAB handling twenty-five research trials both publically and industry funded. Dr. Kurz has authored or co-authored more than 30 research papers and is a reviewer for Circulation, Annals of Emergency Medicine, Resuscitation, and Critical Care Medicine. In addition, Dr. Kurz takes call on the UAB Medical Emergency Team and is Co-Director of the Hypothermia Team providing comprehensive post-resuscitation care for both in-hospital and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
