Michael Grant, MD is an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. A lifelong resident of the state of Maryland, Michael initially completed an undergraduate degree in Neurobiology and Physiology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where he graduated AOA and was class president all four years. He subsequently transitioned across town to Johns Hopkins University to complete his residency in Anesthesiology, where he won the Frank L. Coulson, Jr. Award for Clinical Excellence. This was followed by fellowships in both Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Surgical Critical Care. Currently, his clinical duties include attending in the cardiac and general operating rooms as well as the SICU/WICU, Bayview SICU/Burn ICU and CVSICU units.

Dr. Grant’s research interests include quality improvement, implementation science and the design and maintenance of complex perioperative programs. He was one of the inaugural graduates of the Armstrong Institute Resident Scholars (AIRS) Program, received certification as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and represents ACCM as a Physician Lead for High Value Care. More recently, Dr. Grant has become interested in the adoption of outside industry principles and frameworks to improve the delivery of healthcare. He has nearly completed a Masters in Systems Engineering (SE) from the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering and Applied Physics Laboratories and is a founder and content expert for a novel Masters curriculum for Healthcare SE, which will enroll its first class in the Fall of 2018.

Over the last 18 months, Michael has worked closely with Christopher Wu to establish anesthesia guidelines for numerous Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) service lines at Johns Hopkins. His work has led to over 30 publications, 7 book chapters and more than two-dozen invited local and national presentations. He has been instrumental in the expansion of ERAS across the institution, as well as the installation of an ERAS for colorectal surgery program at Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare (JHAH) in Saudi Arabia. As a result of these efforts, Dr. Grant was invited to attend the 4th installment of the Perioperative Quality Initiative (POQI), a meeting held to establish international consensus guidelines on perioperative care, where experts provided formal recommendations to leverage ERAS concepts towards mitigating the contribution of anesthesia and surgical management to the ongoing national opioid crisis. Dr. Grant now serves as the ACCM Johns Hopkins Hospital Director for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).
