Dr. Mervyn G. Thomas, MBChB, Ph.D. is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer of Ophthalmology and Genomic Medicine at the University of Leicester. He received his medical degree in 2013 and completed both an iBSc and Ph.D. during medical school. He received the Wolfson Prize (Royal College of Physicians) Alcon research prize and the Ph.D. prize for the best thesis across the College of Life Sciences. He has progressed successfully through the competitive integrated clinical academic training pathway initially as an NIHR ACF and subsequently as an NIHR CL. Currently, He leads a translational program of research ranging from lab-based genetic and animal model work to patient-based deep phenotyping multi-center studies. He supervises academic doctors and orthoptists for post-grad and undergrad students. His work has gained national and international recognition evidenced by multiple awards and seminal publications. His work on foveal hypoplasia and developing a grading system is universally accepted and utilized daily in clinics around the world. He was recently elected to the ARVO program committee. He is also a scientific advisor for Nystagmus Network and on the Global Albinism Alliance Scientific Committee.
