Melina studied biochemistry and completed her master thesis with Stefan Heidmann in the laboratory of Christian F. Lehner in 2004. She then did her PhD at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in the group of Jan Ellenberg. She received a joint PhD degree from the University of Heidelberg and EMBL in 2008.

After a short post-doc, Melina moved to Cambridge, where she has been a Group Leader at the MRC LMB since 2009. Melina is an EMBO Young Investigator. She is a recipient of the 2014 Biochemical Society Early Career Award (Cells), a 2014 Lister Research Prize, and the 2015 John Kendrew Young Scientist Award. Her lab's work is funded by an ERC Starting Grant (ChromOocyte), an FP7 Collaborative Grant (MitoSys) and the MRC.
