Mayra Perero MD

Mayra J. Montalvo Perero, MD, is a neurologist and assistant professor with the Department of Neurology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Montalvo Perero is originally from Ecuador, where she obtained her medical degree and graduated in the top 1% of her class from the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in 2013. After medical school, she moved to the United States to pursue a certificate in clinical research from Harvard University.

Before starting residency, she worked as a clinical researcher in noninvasive neuromodulation at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in association with Harvard Medical School. She then completed her neurology residency at Brown University. There, Dr. Montalvo Perero served as the chief resident of neurology and was distinguished with the Neurology Chief Resident Teaching Award. She completed her medical training with a clinical neurophysiology fellowship at Brown University and an autoimmune neurology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.Dr. Montalvo Perero is board-certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Mayra J. Montalvo Perer also advocates for patient care at multiple levels, serving as a consultant to US congressional representatives as part of the Neurology on the Hill program. She also founded and worked as the supervising neurologist at Clinica Esperanza, the only community clinic to provide free neurological care for patients without insurance, in Rhode Island in 2019. She also has numerous scientific publications and presentations. Her interests include autoimmune disorders (paraneoplastic and demyelinating), clinical neurophysiology, medical education, and advocacy.
