Matthias Peter is full Professor for Biochemistry at the ETH Zurich since 2002 and at present chair of the Institute of Biochemistry. His research group uses an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the basic mechanisms that govern cell growth and division in yeast and mammalian cells.

Matthias Peter was born on September 14th, 1962, in Winterthur, Switzerland, and studied Biochemistry at the ETH Zurich. He performed his PhD work with Prof. E. Nigg at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC) of the University of Lausanne. After five years of post-doctoral work with Prof. I. Herskowitz at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF), he received a Career development award (START) from the Swiss National Science Foundation. He was hired as an Assistant Professor at ISREC/University of Lausanne, and tenured in 2002. The research work of the Peter laboratory was recognized 1998 with the Young investigator award of the Helmut Horten Foundation.
