Matthias Ocker studied medicine at the University of Erlangen, Germany, where he obtained his medical doctorate degree in 2000. He got his academic training at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology and the the Department of Gastroenterology of the University Hospital Erlangen.

He became Assistant Professor for Experimental Medicine and head of research at the Department of Gastroenterology in Erlangen and was appointed full professor of Medicine and Director of the Institute for Surgical Research at the University of Marburg in 2009. His academic research focused on liver and GI diseases, esp. HCC and the cellular and molecular biology of cell death and epigenetic regulators. He joined Bayer as Director of Experimental Medicine Oncology in Berlin in 2012 and was appointed as VP and Head of Oncology Biomarker Strategists in 2016. He is adjunct professor of Experimental Medicine at the Charite University Hospital Berlin and has authored more than 100 scientific publications.
