Matthew Chang has made contributions in the field of synthetic biology. His research interests lie in the development of biological systems that perform programmable functions. His work has received international recognition and is featured in leading media outlets worldwide. He has been honored with the Scientific and Technological Achievement Award from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He serves as an editor for Biotechnology for Biofuels, IET Synthetic Biology, Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, and Critical Reviews in Microbiology, and as an editorial board member for Biotechnology Journal, ACS Synthetic Biology and Cell Systems. He serves on the international advisory panel of the Synthetic Biology Open Language (SBOL), an open standard designed to facilitate the exchange and storage of genetic designs. He is a strong advocate of promoting interdisciplinary science that marries engineering, biological, medical and social sciences through primary, secondary and tertiary education, and public science outreach.
