Dr Matt Lyall graduated as a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Aberdeen in 2001. Following a year in clinical hospital practice, he worked for a year as a senior house officer in forensic medicine in Aberdeen. Thereafter he worked in pathology in Aberdeen, training in histopathology, cytopathology and autopsy pathology. In 2007, he commenced training in forensic pathology at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. In early 2009, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, by examination in histopathology, and successfully obtained the Diploma in Medical Jurisprudence (Pathology) of the Society of Apothecaries in early 2010.

From September 2010 to October 2013, he was a Home Office registered pathologist, based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Between November 2013 and May 2017, Dr Lyall was employed as the senior lecturer in forensic pathology at the University of Aberdeen, where he directed the medico-legal autopsy service for the Grampian region and regularly lectured to undergraduates in medicine and law. Since June 2017, he has been practicing as a Home Office registered pathologist in West Yorkshire and Humberside.He is currently the Chair of the Association of Clinical Pathologists’ Forensic Pathology and Autopsy Committee and a member of the Speciality Advisory Committee in Forensic Pathology of the Royal College of Pathologists.
